the largest storm on the planet. about the sides of north carolina, south carolina and virginia combined. hard to miss it on radar. you see it on enhanced radar imagery, it's just off the coast of the carolinas. i can tell you the first impact on the united states is heavy surf. in terms of power ali was talking about moments ago, 145-mile-an-hour max sustained winds. gusts at 175. and this powerhouse is expected to roar its way to the north. where exactly is it going to go? according to the path of the hurricane center, the storm is expected to make a northerly jog over the next two days. by 2:00 in the morning on friday, should be just east of the outer banks. this thing say huge storm. so many people in the carolina coast dealing with heavy winds, of course, strong surf, tremendous waves. there will be millions without power before all said and done. as the storm is expected to move through, a category 3 storm. early saturday morning, a category 2 storm, perhaps, just off the coast cape cod with winds of 100 miles per hour. keep in mind these storms are very fickle and may jog out closer to

going to be huge, alex. it was thursday when republicans gathered out in sterling, virginia, and they unveiled their pledge to america. not to say a contract with america. a lot of people, include something conservatives, criticized it as being light on the details. but the political reality is how much detail do they really need to vat this point. they're almost running a front-runner campaign. but now they have this manifesto to guard themselves against the charge of being the party of no. they want to repeal and replace health care. they want more small business deductions. they want a free spending in 2008 levels. today the communications director here posted a blog post pointing out that that would mean the cutting of many head start children from the head start program. some 3,000 correctional officers from federal facilities around the country. 2700 fbi agents and this morning, the president in his web address had the following to say about gop plans. >> it's grounded in the same warn-out philosophy. cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires, cut the rules for wall

with an impressive track record of predicting such trends. director of the university of virginia politics and joins from us charlottesville. good to see you this morning. let's talk about what you got in your crystal ball. you are talking about essentially a gop takeover of the congress or very, very close to it. in the senate eight to nine gop seats is what larry is predicting in his crystal ball. pickup of 47 seats in the house for republicans, governor's races could swing eight of those seats to the gop side. all in all, pretty impressive election result there if all of that pans out. how did you come to these conclusions. you know, we are hearing that a lot these days. you know, forecasts are coming out. how do you get to those conclusions? >> jim, of course, we studied every race just about every day. this is our job. and we look for lots of different indicators. generic ballot, democrat versus republican. presidential popularity, state of the economy, and the strength of individual candidates, there are so many factors that go into each thing. look, jim, you have been around a long time. you
